Polish is an official language of Poland spoken by approximately 40 million inhabitants of Poland. There are also native speakers mainly in the neighbouring locations of western Belarus and Ukraine, eastern Lithuania, south-eastern Latvia, northern Romania, and the north-eastern part of Czech Republic. Because of emigration from Poland in various periods, there are estimates that around 10 million Polish speakers live in other countries around the world thus making a total of 50 million first language speakers of Polish worldwide

97% of Poland’s citizens list Polish as their mother tongue making it one of the most homogenous of all European countries. There are few dialectal variations in Polish and differences are slight compared to the range of dialects in English, for example. Non-native Polish speakers are generally unable to distinguish among dialects easily.

The use of the Polish language was strictly forbidden for 123 years and every effort was made to annihilate the language by the occupants: Russia, Habsburg Austria and Prussia from 1795-1918. However, the language was preserved and promoted by the native-Polish Great Emigration among them Frederick Chopin, Marie Curie-Sklodowska and Joseph Conrad.
