Community Connect

Language Connect is a socially responsible business committed to engaging with the local community, promoting environmental sustainability and operating in a fair and transparent manner.  At Language Connect, we consider all elements of our CSR strategy to be crucial to our ongoing success and with this in mind we have developed Community Connect – a programme that draws our CSR initiatives together under one umbrella.

Community Connect is born of three principles – People, Community and Environment – that we believe are interlinked and provide us with a solid platform upon which to build and grow Language Connect as a socially aware yet profitable business.

People

Language Connect recognises and values its employees as its most important asset and we are committed to providing staff with a safe and healthy working environment at all times. We are an equal opportunities employer and we ensure that no one receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of race, sexual orientation, age or disability. Since diversity is key to our business as a language services agency we make sure that we take all opportunities to promote and maximise it.

Language Connect believes it is important to consult with its employees to create and design policies and initiatives that have company-wide impact. 2010 saw the launch of our first Employee Engagement survey whose results will influence forthcoming Community Connect issues where appropriate.

Language Connect also runs an internship programme. If you are interested in a three month work placement to learn the ins and outs of the language services industry, please click here for more information.

Language Connect is proud to be a member of the Business Language Champions scheme, helping school children realise the benefits of learning another language by interacting with the local business community. The scheme is part of a wider remit laid out by the Regional Language Network that works to promote language and cultural skills nationwide.

Language Connect - Business Language Champions

Iwona, Amy and Aleksandra - GP surgery interpreting role-play - February 2010

Language Connect was recently named as the first language services agency in the country to become a Business Language Champion having completed the first in a planned series of school workshops at the Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College.

The interactive workshops focus on promoting the different career opportunities in the translation and interpreting services industry to students whose first language is not English. The first workshop was held in February 2010 for Polish students in Years 10 and 11.

Following the success of the Polish workshop, Language Connect plans to hold further workshops and develop a work experience scheme for students who have participated in the sessions.

Environment

Language Connect is committed to operating its business in a sustainable manner by carefully monitoring its impact on the environment and implementing procedures to reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate unnecessary use of natural resources.  We have implemented a list of practical steps we can take to conserve resources and minimize our consumption on a daily basis – these include recycling waste paper, ensuring that all staff turn their computer monitors off at the end of each day and recycling used printer cartridges.

global-action-plan

We are working with Global Action Plan (GAP) – an award-winning charity offering practical solutions to help reduce carbon emissions – to reduce our office-based energy consumption by 10% by the end of 2010.
